Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety-based condition characterised by an excessively anxious thinking pattern. Although the person would like to break free from this recurrent pattern, they find it hard to do so.

Distressing thoughts are instead managed by various routines and rituals that for a short while alleviate the anxiety. These can include touching certain objects, speaking repetitively, counting, checking, washing hands, or carrying out tasks a certain number of times until feeling satisfied enough to have counteracted the anxious thoughts.

OCD can be debilitating and difficult to understand as different people have different worries and compulsions. It is not uncommon for the person to have an accompanying mental health issue such as depression or other type of anxiety issues.

Anxiety Therapy Blue Mountains

Suffering with OCD can be challenging and overwhelming and can cause the person to avoid social interaction in the fear that they will not be able to control their compulsive behaviour. Family relationships can also be challenged as others find it difficult to adjust to the obsessive worries or behaviours of their loved one.

There are many therapies that have been developed to combat the symptoms of OCD and other anxiety disorders. Finding the right treatment can be difficult at first but we work closely with our patients to understand their disorder and recommend a treatment which will be most effective.

Learning tools and strategies to cope with triggers of anxiety and reduce compulsions is also part of the treatment.
