A panic attack is a sudden and usually brief rush of anxiety which causes a mix of negative physical sensations. These sensations can be frightening and bring on feelings of immense fear and danger causing high levels of stress.
Physical sensations which accompany a panic attack are often but not limited to shortness of breath, sweaty palms, racing heart, dizziness, muscle tension and trembling.
A person experiencing a panic attack will find it very difficult to calm down during an episode and will often feel distressed long after the attack has stopped.
Some people may develop an ongoing fear that they will experience more attacks in the future which can lead to avoidance of certain situations or location so as to try and prevent another attack.
Although panic attacks tend to begin quickly and without warning initially, they will usually develop and are triggered by situations.
Managing this on your own can be extremely difficult especially if you begin to anticipate ongoing panic attacks. Learning to control your thoughts towards attacks, changing your behaviour and coping mechanisms throughout the duration of an attack and diverting your attention onto something else are strategies that can help in these types of situations.
We can work with you to provide you with tools to be able to work through such negative situations in the future.
