A personality disorder is an enduring pattern of inner experience and behaviour that is very different from the one experienced by other people. This pattern is characterised by being quite pervasive over time and brings along distress to those living with it.

There are many types of personality disorders all of which vary based on the presenting symptoms. Most personality disorders are characterised by instability within relationships, behaviours and moods. People who experience symptoms of a personality disorder have developed a pattern of thinking over a long period of time which becomes inflexible and often irrational. The most commonly diagnosed personality disorder is borderline personality disorder.
