We all strive for the best in our lives. Whether it be school, work, hobbies or relationships most of us want to conduct things to a high standard. Being passionate about excelling and pushing yourself to achieve your goals can show great dedication and drive, however, when gaining these achievements involves extreme or unhealthy self-criticism, this personality trait becomes unhealthy.
A person high on perfectionism can strive to achieve unrealistic goals and set for themselves overly high standards in which they feel shame and despair if they cannot achieve these.
Perfectionism can be indicative of other mental health issues such as anxiety or personality disturbance and can be preceded by environmental factors such as parents with high expectations and unrealistic standards and fear or worries of disapproval from others. Perfectionists will often apply unduly stress on themselves if they are unable to complete a task perfectly; this type of stress may even stop the person from attempting these tasks in fear that they won’t be able to achieve them to the standard they are seeking.
High and often unrelenting standards can appear in various aspects of a persons’ life such as physical appearance, environmental surroundings, physical activity, workplace, school, hygiene practices, speaking and writing, relationships and other. Placing self under such a high stress can have a real impact on the person’s mental health. We can help with the symptoms of perfectionism and accompanying mental health issues.
