Trauma is a response which can develop following a distressing or troubling experience that is too overwhelming and difficult for the person to process and adjust to. Depending on the time required for adjustment to this experience, or the lack of it, a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may develop and the personal experience of this complex problem can vary from person to person.

Commonly, people will experience symptoms associated with the trauma such as nightmares or night terrors, uncontrollable thoughts, hypervigilance, unwanted flashbacks, disturbed sleep, anxiety and problems with mood. Some can feel as if they are alone and helpless, and often struggle with these issues on their own for months or years, developing further mental health issues.

Anxiety Therapy Blue Mountains

There are many effective therapies which can be used to treat PTSD and trauma related issues. People suffering from these symptoms don’t have to suffer in silence and with ongoing treatment can successfully maintain and reduce their symptoms. Understanding trauma, the behaviours associated with it and changing the thought patterns that go with it can help to effectively reduce symptoms and encourage resilience.

If you or someone you know is suffering with PTSD or is having symptoms related to a trauma-based incident it is best to seek help as soon as you can. Seeking help sooner will have a positive effect on your overall mental health and benefits from the treatment process will likely be seen sooner. Treatment options vary from person to person and some treatments can be more effective than others. We use a gentle approach to establish the best suited treatment option for our patients and work with them towards a road to recovery.
