Being dependent and feeling an attachment to someone, generally our partner is normal to a certain degree. It is normal to occasionally feel as though you need your partner more than usual and vice versa. It is when this behaviour becomes more frequent and starts to impact your relationship that it becomes a problem.

Co-dependent relationships are often one-sided and involve one person in the relationship relying on their partner for their own self-esteem and emotional needs. It can also describe a relationship where one person is able to sustain manipulative, irresponsible, and dishonest behaviour.

Symptoms of co-dependency can be low self-esteem, poor boundaries, people-pleasing, extreme reactions, controlling behaviour, caretaking, obsessions, dependency, lack of communication, denial, intimacy issues and heightened emotions. These symptoms affect both people within the relationship on different levels.

Co-dependency doesn’t just occur in partnerships, it can also occur between siblings, parents and children, and, friends.
